Money Fast Update – Day 6

November 23, 2009

The last of the fresh meat is gone.

Right before we began our experiment to go on a money fast for a month, we purchased a couple of packs of chicken breast from Safeway. One went into the freezer, one into the fridge. Six days in to the fast, and we’re out. It had been our main protein source, and we didn’t want it to go bad, so we ate chicken.

We ate it for breakfast, for lunch, and for dinner. Well, sometimes breakfast and lunch were combined. I would marinate a couple of breasts in vinegar and soy-sauce. Then I would cover them with spices and toss a few chopped up chili peppers on for good measure. I’d bake them at 400 degrees for a half an hour, and serve them with brown rice and cooked chopped carrots.

And now they’re gone.

So, not for the first time since the experiment began, we must adapt.

A side effect neither of us thought of when we started, was the opportunity to clear out our kitchen and start again from scratch. With my diet coming into effect a month ago, and the major shifts in spending we’ve had since we moved in, the kitchen has become sort of a hodge-podge of healthy/disgusting foods. Some things in our kitchen, you’d expect to find, deep fried, at a carnival. Some stuff, at a purist vegan restaurant. Not wanting to waste food, we never wanted to throw any of it out. And thus, this is the perfect opportunity to use it up and get it out.

Other things we’ve run out of, or are getting dangerously low on are: tortillas, brown rice, butter, and capers. Not exactly end-of-the-world stuff (unless you are obsessed with brown rice like me), but it is getting uncomfortable.

The thing that really worries me is how little protein we have left after only 6 days. Of course, we didn’t plan ahead or anything, but it is the situation, and it’s very worrisome. Being pretty severely hypoglycemic, if I don’t get the amount of animal proteins my body asks for, I start to go crazy. Literally.

We do have some hot dogs in the freezer, and some canned tuna left, though it’s mostly packed away in our backpacks, awaiting our trip to Klamath Falls on Thursday. I am planning on trying to trick my body into taking the saturated fats in things like re-fried beans in as protein instead.

As far as other purchases go, we’ve had no issue. An invoice came for a magazine subscription we hadn’t yet paid for, but we’ve tucked that away to get to after the month is up. Our BART cards and Muni passes are standing us in good stead, and the decreased opportunity for expensive entertainment has driven us inside all weekend, drumming us into productivity mode.

We’ll see if I feel this positive about the experiment after six more days.
