We have completely run out of bell peppers.
This wouldn’t be considered an emergency in any other household, but in ours, it’s tragic. Most of the dishes I cook use bell-peppers in large quantities, and funny enough, it wasn’t until these disappeared that we began to feel the burn.
You see, bell peppers aren’t that expensive. Five bucks would get us a fairly large bag of them. But whether we can afford it or not, it would violate the rules of the experiment to purchase them, and we made a commitment.
So, another benefit of the experiment has been discovered: expansion by necessity. We’ll both have to expand our tastes (we have a large tub of mushrooms we’re beginning to eat, even though neither of us like mushrooms very much), our cooking abilities, and our definition of how we define ‘food’.
Nothing besides this area of our lives have suffered that noticeable of a difference yet. We have had some very thrifty periods in our relationship before, and it is nothing new to us to pack snacks instead of buying food out.
Another area we are both beginning to worry about is milk and soy-milk (I don’t eat dairy). Our plan? Go to one of the many large Starbucks in the city and fill a small container using the half and half on their counter. The soy-milk? We’re not quite sure yet. As my godmother recently suggested in an email, our first purchase after the month is over will likely be a large pack of powdered milk. Anybody want to donate one?
In other news: I reached the halfway point (25,000 words) in my NaNoWriMo novel yesterday. It feels great. I’m still behind where I need to be by this point in the month, especially taking into account the lack of time I’ll have later due to the camping trip we’ll be going on. But I’ll catch up over the weekend.
We’re going to the midnight showing of “New Moon” tonight. We were both relieved that we had purchased those tickets before the experiment kicked into gear. It should be fun. I’m gonna pop some popcorn at home to bring to the show.
