Don’t Wait Your Turn

November 19, 2009

Every day I walk down to the subway station a few blocks away from my apartment, put my monthly pass in the slot on the turnstile, and walk down to wait for the next train.

Every morning there are two groups of people standing on the platform.

One group stands against the back wall. They read their morning paper, stare blankly at the digital “arrivals” display with headphones in their ears, and tap on their cell-phone’s keyboard.

Then there is the second group. These people stand right on the edge. Close to the yellow line. Their eyes glued on the space in which the train will arrive.

Can you guess which group I’m in?

Where would I see you standing on my morning commute? Would you be waiting passively, waiting your turn in the line for opportunity? Or would you be up on the front line with me, willing something awesome to come along, and settling for nothing but a window seat?
