When I was in Germany, I learned to speak German fluently in only 3 months. It was challenging, but inevitable. I was immersed.
Now, as I write these words, I am immersed in a new kind of language. As I write this, I am cursing my keyboard. I met up with Todd Iceton at Samovar in Zen Valley, and we talked momentarily about the alternate “Dvorak” keyboard layout. I had spent several days in turmoil trying to master it, but eventually gave up as I was writing copy for a client at the time, and couldn’t sacrifice income. Todd listened to this story and eventually responded with “Well…why not?”.
My fate was sealed. When someone you respect and look up to gives you a challenge, you don’t simply ignore it and move on. You respond with everything you’ve got.
Gee thanks Todd! Now every word I write takes a half an hour. Not only am I motivated to relearn quickly because I’m tired of being frustrated, but I am starting NaNoWriMo next month to write my second novel, and with only 5 days to go (including today) this is definitely a push.
My goal is to spend these 5 days writing as much as I can. Forgive me if my posts for the next few days are a little quick winded. I’ve got a whole new language to learn!
