Superhuman update

October 22, 2009

So far the diet is going well. I’ve started learning new ways to cook chicken, and made some awesome buffalo wings (without the breading and other junk) last night. I am also seriously enjoying having my morning smoothie. I make it with fresh fruit from the farmer’s market, protein powder, ice, and water.

But my favorite part of this new switch? The yummy, soul-improving fresh squeezed carrot juice. My mom bought an incredibly high-tech juicer before she passed away, and I have had the blessing of getting it passed on to me. Now, for the cost of a 5 pound sack of carrots from the farmer’s market (which is typically just over 3 dollars) I can make a whole jug of the stuff and drink it through the week.

My biggest issue has been “emergency meals”. Trying to find good stuff to eat in the city that fits within my diet is incredibly hard. Even the trendy “health food” oriented places peppered around San Francisco just replace sugars with toxic additives, and serve pasta (essentially just refined sugar pre-digested) in replacement for meat and veggies.

The shining star has been La Boulange, a friend place on Market st. near third. Its expensive as heck, but when you’re facing that or not eating, the choice to open up your wallet gets easier than one would suspect.

I have noticed I have a bit of a tendency to make things overly salty now that I’m lacking traditional chemical-filled seasonings. Or perhaps my taste buds are just acclimating to the lack of over-sugared foods, and are becoming more sensitive. In either case, I will need to rethink my sodium intake. Another easy fix would be more water.

As far as becoming a superhuman goes, I feel more like a food-disorder teenager. But I can feel my system reevaluating how to treat the food its given, and I think it will start to recognize that it is nearly pure nutrients now, and less fat.

I’m going to start working out on Friday at Crunch Gym here in the city. Working out has always meant something different to me than most. I don’t find weight-lifting to be all that good feeling. I usually feel like I’m choking when I do it. I know most people say its because I’m “doing it wrong”, and I probably am. So I’ll do something I know how to do right. Dancing.

The Crunch Gym offers unlimited dance classes when you sign up for a gym membership. This is a really cool way, I think, to get your exercise. Those of you who know me know that I studied as a professional dancer for over eight years. So its more than just a comfort zone.

My only concern is that my knee is still somewhat damaged and tender from surgery a few months ago. My experience with these sorts of classes is that the instructor will often have an experienced student with knee/ankle damage demonstrate the “low-impact” version of what the instructor is doing. Let’s hope these classes are the same.

That’s the update. I’m feeling good. But I need to start getting a lot more active before I’ll be on the way to superhuman.

Do you peel the carrots first?

Nope. No peeling of the carrots. The juice tastes awesome too.
