How Teen Girls Get Pregnant

May 13, 2009

“I didn’t mean to! It just…happened.”

Parents are hearing this more than they should. Teen girls and guys – be them Christian, Muslim, or Atheist – take vows of celibacy and nun-hood, and weeks later come back with a devastating story about how they “couldn’t say no”.

And how could they say no? Sex drives are part of our bodies, whether we like it or not. Abstinence may be “the only way you can effectively, 100 percent foolproof way you can prevent pregnancy” as new mother Bristol Palin preaches to us, but does the teaching of abstinence in schools work?

President Bush agreed with this advice. During his eight years of pregnancy presidency, he threw tons of money at programs aimed to educate teens about the practice.

Its hard for me to invision, having never taken a class in abstinence, how the daily meetings might go.

“So this is the banana, and this is the papaya. As long as they don’t touch each other, you won’t get any bapayas. You’re safe!”

Gee. That sort of education must cost alot.

But the point is: Obama has a different opinion of what should be taught. Thank God. He’s rebalanced the scales, and is redirecting funding toward a more “comprehensive” sex education.

Just in case us American teens decide to answer our biological cravings.

So, what’s better? Do you agree with me that this is a positive change? Or were you in favor of Bush’s “just say no” approach to teen sex?
