The Night-Light Epiphany

May 6, 2009

This is a conversation I had online with Chanterelle tonight. I thought it was so valuable to remember, I should post it here:

Christian: I just had a major breakthrough moment. A realization.

Chanterelle: Really?

Christian: while I was in the bathroom. I went into the restroom and thought about turning on the light, which inevitably wakes people up/disturbs people because of the gap underneath the door. But I realized, as I closed the door, that there was an awesome little nightlight, just sitting there, kicking ass and doing it’s little thing. I thought to myself, “wow. That nightlight is awesome. I wonder how I can work the metaphore of a nightlight into my writing, or into a coaching session”.

And then I realized: Its not about the content, its about the perspective. Having something to offer isn’t about creating incredible one-time-only products and writing that will save the world and be of value forever. Its about developing the perspective that will allow you to create what is relevant and helpful to people over and over. It’s about being able to think about how to use a nightlight as a metaphorical coaching tool, etc. You know what I’m saying? Non-fiction books (especially self help, even good ones) are always just repeated information that was already written about 50 years before. But its updated, its put in a new perspective, for a new generation. It HAS to be that way because that is how people learn. It must be translated by those who understand the concept.

Chanterelle: I think I get it its look at life from a perspective that makes it seem right rather then wrong to be overly simple.

Christian: Not quite. You may get it, but I may not understand that you get it. I mean as far as creating value for others, which is my goal right now. Marketable value, not marketable crap, but marketable value. Stuff I’ll get paid for that helps others.

Chanterelle: Ya but it applies to everything really

Christian: I suppose that’s true. But relating it to everything it would sound more like its not about the amount of knowledge you gain from reading books, or going through school, or from experience. Its about the perspective you gain. The focusing of the lens from which you view the world.

Having lots of little pieces of sand (those are books, courses, school, conversations with people, life experiences, breakthrough moments like these) that form together to create the glass that is shaped to create the lens that creates the telescope allowing you to see the world from different distances and angles. Yes?

Chanterelle: Yes.
